Last weekend I embarked on my seasonal closet purge and after about three hours of changing, categorizing, and hot chocolate breaks (not listed in order of frequency or importance), I realized something: the lack of basics versus surplus of “trendy” items was saddening.
Part of maturing into a senior for me, I guess, has also been about rebranding my personal style to actually fit me. Life hack: that whole “be yourself because everyone else is already taken” thing actually works. I used to just buy all the right trends and tag along with what everyone else was wearing because in my mind, that would make me feel most comfortable in my own skin and “blend in”. What I’ve realized now is that wearing what I like, and not just what I’m told to like, has made me feel more confident and pretty. Sure, trends aren’t just useless, but making them work in my own way is the whole point.
So, now I’m set on making up for lost time and adding pieces in my collection that I can throw on whenever and create multiple types of looks. I am completely unashamed in stating that I actually bought this top in three colors (white, black, and grey) after realizing how comfortable and versatile and CHEAP it was! Also found the perfect pair of ripped skinnies that I’ve been searching for forever and I swear they’re soft enough to pass as leggings.
The shoes though, the shoes. Mine are a dupe of the original Betsey Johnson’s, but make no mistake are just as adorable. The real ones are on the top of my Christmas wishlist though (mom, dad, Santa: hint hint). I literally can’t get enough of them.
Have you updated your closet recently? Tell me about what hidden treasures/tragic faux pas you’ve found! God only knows I have way too many to tell.
